Happy in McAllen
"1. What surprised you the most about the Greater Mcallen Area? As native Texans, the Valley has not been what we imagined. It isn't underdeveloped or terribly rural; in fact, it feels like most of the suburban areas where we've lived. We have everything we need--from restaurants to retail shops to entertainment--and you can't beat living 15 minutes from the airport. There are little pockets of McAllen, some tucked away, that the locals tell you about and you'll discover on your own. We're also ecstatic to live near an HEB again. Best grocery store in Texas.
2. What activities have you taken part in or want to take part in? There's always something going on. The local festivals are entertaining and a nice break from the usual weekend events; Onion Fest in Weslaco is great if you're a fan of the 1015 onions. The Junior League organizes a fabulous holiday bazaar, and in the fall and spring, Art Walk is a great way to see downtown McAllen. We're Dallas Stars fans, but we've been attending the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees games to get a hockey fix. The farmers market in downtown McAllen makes the warm weather worth it because you can get great organic produce, locally grown in January.
3. What would you tell someone just moving to the area that would give them a feel for our area? Remember that the Valley is a small town, it just looks bigger than that. Find your communities, find your niche, and you'll soon have your own network of people to keep you informed and to help you battle the summer heat. " back to top
